Fragrance-Free Horse Care: Fragrance Is for People

A fresh herbal scent, a subtle citrus note, “summer meadow”—horse care products often smell like products made for people. This is no coincidence: The scent is meant to appeal to the buyer. The horse gets nothing out of it. This guide explains why fragrances are unnecessary and how to identify fragrance-free products.

In brief

Fragrances serve no therapeutic purpose in horse care products – they are intended solely for the human nose. At the same time, they are among the most common triggers of contact allergies caused by care products, and horses have a significantly keener sense of smell than humans. The equion Hoof & Skin Gel is free from fragrances and colourants and is suitable for horses prone to allergies.

Key findings

  • Fragrance alters the smell, not the product’s effectiveness.
  • ‘Parfum’ and ‘Fragrance’ are clear indicators in the ingredients list.
  • Essential oils are also mixtures of fragrances.
  • ‘Fragrance-free’ may still contain a subtle natural odour from the raw materials.

Nose Check 03

No scent. No hidden formula.

‘Parfum’, ‘Fragrance’ and individually listed fragrance components are the key terms to look out for. ‘Perfume-free’ does not necessarily mean odourless.

Understanding the category

Why do horse care products smell at all?

Scent is a selling point. It masks the natural odour of the raw materials, creates a ‘sense of care’ for the user and helps products stand out on the shelf. All of this is aimed at the person who buys and applies the product – not at the animal that wears it.

A fragrance serves no purpose on a horse’s skin. It does not nourish, it does not protect, it does not cleanse. It is an additive that is in the tube primarily for marketing reasons – and which is applied directly to the body of a living creature with a sensitive sense of smell.

Skin & Smell

What fragrances mean for the skin and our senses

Fragrances as common contact allergens

In human cosmetics, fragrances have long been recognised as one of the most common causes of contact allergies caused by skincare products. It is not without reason that, in the EU, certain fragrances must be listed individually on cosmetic packaging if they are present. The same basic logic applies to sensitive animal skin: every additional reactive substance is yet another potential irritant.

Anyone who regularly applies a product to the same areas of the skin, such as the pasterns or hoof walls, would be well advised to keep the number of potentially sensitising additives to a minimum. Fragrances are particularly easy to do without.

Sensitive horses, sensitive noses

Horses rely heavily on their sense of smell. A perfume that we might consider ‘subtle’ can be an intense, unfamiliar odour on a horse’s own body – one it cannot shake off. Particularly in the case of sensitive horses or those with a keen sense of smell, animal welfare is another strong argument in favour of fragrance-free care products.

Practical advice

How to spot fragrance-free products: the label check

  1. 01

Check the INCI list. Fragrances are listed there as ‘Parfum’ or ‘Fragrance’. Individual fragrance components such as limonene, linalool or geraniol may also be listed.

  2. 02

Classify as ‘naturally scented’. Essential oils are also mixtures of fragrances. ‘Scented with natural oils’ does not mean ‘fragrance-free’.

  3. 03

Distinguish between ‘fragrance-free’ and ‘odourless’. ‘Fragrance-free’ means: no added fragrances. A slight natural odour from the raw materials may still be present.

Practical tip: Smell the open tube. You can usually recognise a distinctly scented product straight away; a fragrance-free one smells neutral or has a subtle scent of its raw materials.

Powerful. Gentle. Pure.

The equion way: neutral rather than scented

The equion Hoof & Skin Gel contains no fragrances – nor any colourants. What you smell, if anything, is the raw materials themselves; nothing is masked, nothing is added.

equion products use scientifically tested ingredients without harsh chemicals – free from fragrances and colourants. Suitable for horses prone to allergies.

The formula follows a simple principle: nothing in the tube that doesn’t belong there. This includes acids and harsh chemicals – which is why there are no hazard symbols or warning labels on the tube. Manufactured in facilities certified to ISO 22716, the production standard for human cosmetics. Packaged in medical-grade packaging. Made in Germany.

Frequently asked questions

01Are fragrances dangerous for horses?

Approved fragrances are not acutely dangerous in normal concentrations. However, they are among the most common triggers of skin reactions caused by grooming products and are an intense foreign odour for the horse – with zero grooming benefit. Avoiding them is the simplest way to minimise risk.

02How can I identify fragrances in the list of ingredients?

Look out for the terms ‘Parfum’ or ‘Fragrance’, as well as individually listed fragrance components such as limonene, linalool or geraniol.

03Is the equion Hoof & Skin Gel really fragrance-free?

Yes. equion is free from fragrances and colourings. The raw materials may have a subtle natural odour – but no added fragrances are used.

04Is equion suitable for horses prone to allergies?

equion products use scientifically tested ingredients without harsh chemicals – free from fragrances and colourants. Suitable for horses prone to allergies. In the case of existing skin conditions, your vet will determine the appropriate treatment.

05Are essential oils a better alternative to synthetic fragrances?

Essential oils are also mixtures of fragrances and can cause sensitisation too – ‘natural’ does not automatically mean ‘gentler on the skin’. Anyone wishing to avoid fragrances should steer clear of both types.
